Spooky B*tch Walk

In the early 1970s, there was a gay bar in the French Quarter of New Orleans called the Upstairs Lounge. At the time, there weren’t many safe spaces for the LGBT+ community so the owners of the Upstairs Lounge created a refuge. On June 24, 1973, the Upstairs Lounge buzzer sounded and Buddy the bartender sent someone to answer the door. As this man opened the door, a fireball burst into the bar and within minutes, the walls were engulfed in flames. Thirty-two people died as a result of this fire and many more were injured. 
This would become the deadliest fire in New Orleans history. Normally, a crime of this magnitude would be covered by the press persistently, but that wasn't the case for the Upstairs Lounge arson. Nobody wanted to report on the story simply because it was a gay bar. The way the victims and survivors of this attack were treated in the media and even by investigators is horrific and some families of the victims are still struggling to get justice to this day.

On this week’s episode, Hannah finishes telling Jessica about Gwen Shamblin and the weight loss cult. In June 2018, Gwen divorced her husband of 40 years; and in August 2018, she married Joe Lara, an actor, pilot, and aspiring country music singer. Joe already had a daughter with Natasha Pavlovich, fellow actor and pilot and all around badass. Natasha worried about the influence Joe and Gwen were having on her daughter. So she took things into her own hands and represented herself in court while fighting for more custody and more rights to their daughter. 
During one of Joe’s weekends with their daughter, Natasha got a call that Joe’s plane had crashed into a lake. Thankfully, Natasha’s daughter was not on that plane. But Joe and Gwen were. Listen to the entire episode to find out what happened to Remnant Fellowship after Gwen’s untimely death.

In the early 90s, Gwen Shamblin created the Weigh Down Workshop, a faith-based weightloss program. Her “revolutionary” idea was to eat less and pray more. This spread like wildfire. Gwen was putting out curriculum nonstop and churches all over the world were buying into this idea and hosting their own Weigh Down Workshops. This was relatively harmless…at first.
Eventually, Gwen created her own church called Remnant Fellowship and claimed that hers was the “true church” and all others were “false churches.” Members sometimes relocated their entire families in order to be able to attend Remnant in person. 
Gwen and Remnant Fellowship directed members in every aspect of their lives including parenting. Unfortunately, this would prove to be deadly.

In August 1990, five college students were brutally murdered in their apartments in Gainesville, Florida. They had been sexually assaulted, stabbed, and then their bodies were posed in ways to shock whoever discovered them. Investigators in Shreveport, Louisiana, heard about these murders and thought they sounded awfully similar to an unsolved triple homicide in Shreveport. They found that the perpetrator of the Shreveport murders and the Gainesville murders had the same blood type which was more evidence that the killings were connected. 
A few months later, police received a tip from a woman in Louisiana who suggested they look into a man she had met at her church: Danny Rolling. Danny had a history of sexual assault, robbery, and voyeurism. They were able to compare his DNA to the killers’ DNA, and it was a match.

In this episode, we’re going to Hannah and Bob’s favorite place: the Hook Peninsula. The Hook Peninsula is located in County Wexford, Ireland, and is home to the oldest working lighthouse in the whole world and the most haunted house in the whole country. The Hook Lighthouse was built in the 13th century and that lighthouse is the same one that operates today. 
Loftus Hall is said to be the most haunted house in Ireland. Legend has it the Devil himself visited Loftus Hall hundreds of years ago and left a young woman in ruins. This woman would be locked away by her family to live the rest of her days looking out the same window in the same room until her death…but many believe her spirit is still there.

In 2009, a young woman in Perth, Australia, was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer and told she had 4 months to live. She started doing conventional treatment which made her very sick. During this time, she found out she was pregnant. She stopped all treatments at this time and completely changed her diet. Three years later, she was still alive and thriving. She created an Instagram account where she documented her healthy lifestyle and claimed this lifestyle had cured her cancer. 
She quickly grew a massive social media following which led to a health and wellness app, The Whole Pantry, and a book deal of the same name. Her followers were inspired by her and thought her story was amazing. And it would be…if any of it were true.

Over a 6 month period of 1992 in Seattle, WA, a serial arsonist was on the loose. He started by burning down churches and then moved on to businesses and homes. He was quick and sneaky, and police couldn’t catch him.
Eventually, with the help of a forensic hypnotist and sketch artist, police received a tip from a man who believed his son, Paul Keller, was the arsonist. After surveilling Paul for ten days, he was arrested and confessed to setting over 75 fires, one of which led to the death of three elderly women.

Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. In honor of this day, today’s episode is about just one of these missing and murdered women. 
Hanna Harris was born on May 5, 1992 in Montana. She was raised in Lame Deer, MT on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. On July 3, 2013, Hannah left her 10 month old son in the care of her uncle while she went out with family and friends to the 4th of July Powwow. Her car was found abandoned on a dead end road early the next morning. 
Without the help of police, her family was able to gather over 100 people to help search for Hanna. After five agonizing days, her body was discovered in a field near her car. Hanna’s killers were eventually arrested and prosecuted, but if the authorities would have stepped in and helped from the beginning, maybe one of her killers wouldn’t be free right now. 
This is just one Indigenous woman’s story, but there are countless others. The statistics are staggering. In 2015, Dr. Teresa Sievers was brutally murdered in her home in Florida. She had left a family trip early because she had a medical practice to run. Her husband and two daughters were thousands of miles away at the time of the murder, but investigators still suspected her husband almost immediately. Mark Sievers was over the top dramatic during his initial interview with police. Unfortunately, investigators had nothing to link him to the crime. 
Until two weeks later when they received an anonymous tip from someone in Missouri. This led them to Curtis Wayne Wright and Jimmy Ray Rodgers. Turns out, Curtis and Mark had been best friends since high school. In fact, Mark had just been Curtis’s best man in his wedding two months earlier. 
With the help of recovered GPS records and CCTV footage, detectives were able to link Curtis, Jimmy, and Mark to the murder of Dr. Teresa Sievers. All three received different sentences and two of them continue trying to appeal.

During the fall of 1989 in a small Minnesota town, three young boys rode their bikes to the video store to rent a movie. On their way home, they were confronted by a man in a mask who ordered them to lay in a ditch. The man told two of the boys to run away and not to look back or else he would shoot them. The boy that was left with the man was Jacob Wetterling. It would be 27 years before his remains would be discovered and his family would see justice. 
In 2016, Danny Heinrich was questioned about Jacob’s disappearance. He made a full confession and led investigators to his body. In exchange for his full cooperation, Heinrich was not charged with murder but just the child sexual abuse charges he was already facing. 
Jacob’s family and community are the epitome of hope. On October 22, 2016, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton declared October 22nd to be “Jacob Wetterling Day.” Every year on this day, residents leave their porch lights on to honor Jacob and all other missing children.
